THE PATRONS & STAFF OF BULFINCHE'S PUB SPEAK OUT ON THE MURPHY'S LORE BOOKS
|
Bulfinche's Pub from Padwolf Presnts #1 cover by Jeff Doten. Many character sketches below are from his cover. Please click on his name for a link to his home page.
BULFINCHE'S PUB When in New York City, watch the sky carefully. If you are lucky enough, you may see a rainbow. Follow it and you may be rewarded with more than a pot of gold. You might find a place where the drinks are cold, the company legendary, and magic is real. The name of the place is Bulfinche's Pub. Paddy and the gang are there to help the helpless and give hope back to those who have lost it. Laugh. Cry. Read. Enjoy.
THE STAFF AT BULFINCHE'S PUB:
PADDY: Leprechaun Padriac Moran is the heart and soul of Bulfinche's Pub. He bought the place back in the late 1800's with his pot of gold. Ever since, rainbows have lead those in trouble to Bulfinche's, where they can find help from legends.
MURPH: John Murphy, is a bartender at Bulfinche's and the narrator of the tales. Murph was on the run from loansharks when he caught Paddy in order to get his pot of gold. When push came to shove, Murphy did the right thing and let Paddy go. Paddy helped Murph deal with the loan shark and gave him a job. He's refused to leave ever since and has become part of the Bulfinche's family. He seems to have a endless supply of wisecracks.
DION: (aka Dionysus, Bacchus) The god of wine and orgies has been a bartender at Bulfinche's for decades. His present appearance is that of a man in his fifties with a wine belly with black hair and matching beard. Despite this non-glamorous form, woman fall for him at the drop of a hat. As a matter of fact, one time when he did drop his hat, a small riot broke out among the womenfolk trying to pick it up. All the drinks served in Bulfinche's Pub are made in house. Paddy brews the beer and whiskey while Dion takes care of the rest, although they do collaborate on certain projects.
HERMES: (aka Mercury, Pyschopompous) The former messenger of the Olympus pantheon now works for Paddy Moran and hangs his helm in New York City, although these days he wears a baseball cap with the Bulfinche's logo. His winged sandals have been replaced by winged red high top sneakers.
DEMETER: The earth goddess now works as the chef at Bulfinche's Pub turning out the best food probably anywhere. She has a greenhouse on the roof of Bulfinche's Pub, which is her domain although the elemental Foster has several host bodies there. She is mildly obsessed with her feud with her son-in-law Pluto and is disappointed that her daughter Persephone has not produced any grandchildren.
FRED: The satyr Fred is the son of Pan. He left his homeland to journey to New York City to follow the foremost hero of his people, Dionysus. Dion however wasn't looking for a follower or worshiper-those days were long over for the god of wine and orgies- and he tried to send Fred away. Paddy saw the discomfort Fred was causing Dion, and because of that (and the fact that Fred was shorter than Paddy) he hired him as a busboy on the spot. Fred is an abnormality among his people-a virgin. Satyrs don't hit puberty until their 70's, which is when their ability to produce pheromones develops. Fred has fallen in love with the waitress Toni and has decided to wait for her, despite a proposition from the Faerie Queen Titania.
TONI: At one point Toni had hit rock bottom and had started to tunnel underground. She was a heroin addict, turning tricks to pay for her next fix. When she found out she was pregnant, she decided to turn her life around. That night, the people she lived with shot up a bad batch and died. Toni found the dead bodies of her friends in the morning and fled to the streets. The Mother of the Streets kept a watchful eye on her, but not 24/7. Toni made a deal with Ramos to give him anything he asked for if her life became better. Toni was lead to Bulfinche's, where the pregnant girl was given a job as a waitress and helped through the rest of her detox. The following Christmas, Ramos showed up, demanding his due. Toni had not realized Ramos was a demon when she made her bargain. Since Paddy and the gang had ruined the apocalypse and helped the Beast turn away from his hellish duties, it seemed only fitting that Toni's unborn child replace and become the new beast. Paddy outsmarted Ramos and saved Toni and her daughter.
Character print available at padwolf.com/mlseries.htm MATHEW: Mathew is an angel, in fact a seraphim-one of the angels who serve in the creator's presence. Mathew was sent to Earth again and again to help prepare the Host's part of the Apocalypse. On numerous of these occasions he encountered Ryth, a demon succubus, working on the Horde's agenda. Despite their obvious differences, the pair fell in love and used the aftermath of the aborted Apocalypse to run away together. Demeter fashioned them a pair of amulets with the pub's shot o' gold logo which have helped to keep them hidden. Paddy hired Mathew as a dishwasher, a job he still holds today. The renegade angel finds he enjoys the physical work. Now for the first time in untold ages Heaven and Hell have the same goal-find the traitorous pair and make them pay for their betrayals.
Character print available at padwolf.com/mlseries.htm RYTH: After the events described above, Ryth worked for a time as a waitress at Bulfinche's Pub. The runaway succubus saved her tips and became an entrepreneur, opening up her own 900 line phone sex service.
THE KIDS:
BRIAN, SHELLIE, & NELLIE: Three street kids, saved by the Mother of the Streets and brought to Bulfinche's Pub. Brian was a runaway fleeing abuse. Shellie and Nellie were sisters who woke one morning on a subway landing huddled against their mother who had died of an overdose. A street shark had dark plans for the trio, along with Peter. Rebecca rescued the trio and punished the shark, only sparing his life out of deference to Paddy and his respect for all life and the chance that even the worst among us can find redemption. That didn't stop her from putting the pimp in the hospital. Along with Peter, they came to live in the apartments upstairs at Bulfinche's Pub. After Peter's death, they asked Paddy to officially adopt them. Paddy accepted and they became his children. Shellie is the little mother of the group, trying to take care of the rest. Nellie, surrounded by gods and legends, has aspirations to become a ninja, which Shellie thinks is ridiculous. Brian is very protective of his adoptive sisters which doesn't stop him from teasing them.
PETER: Peter was dumped by his natural parents, illegal immigrants, at a hospital. Peter had Down's Syndrome and was taken in by the same street shark pimp as the others and was also rescued by Rebecca. He had lived with Paddy and the gang, until they found a couple to adopt him. His was a tragic death, but Peter's spirit lives on as a guide, helping the recently dead to pass on to one of the various afterlives.
CORNY: Corny, a shapeling, was born of a mortal woman and a Gentry father. As a infant, he was kidnaped by the minions of Queen Titania and spent the first few years of his life in Faerie. Titania then convinced him to take the place of his mother's "dead" baby, which was in fact him. Through the wonders of quantum geography, he was able to return to his own crib later the same night he was taken, despite years having passed in Faerie. Corny spent the next several years of his life in New York, thinking he wasn't his mother's son. Paddy and the other kids helped set matters straight and in the process he met his father who has made some attempts to get back into his life.
B.G.: Beatrice Gerald (B.G. for short) was named after Paddy's late wife. Born after the events with the demon Ramos, she avoided having to become the next Beast. She is a toddler living a normal life. Normal at least for Bulfinche's Pub. She is the apple of Fred's eye. He could not love B.G. more is she were his own daughter.
THE PATRONS:
REBECCA: The Mother of the Streets is quite mad, but very in control of herself. She lived through the tragedies of Nazi death camps and later seeing her family slaughtered before her eyes. When the men who murdered her family where not convicted, she took vengeance herself. Ever since she has lived on the streets, helping countless others to get off them. With Paddy's financial help she, Father Mike, and the employee of the week help run a homeless shelter in the first level of the Bulfinche's parking garage. Rebecca claims the streets talk to those who know how to listen and they seem to tell her things that she should have no other way of knowing.
JUDAH MACABEE: Judah is a golem, a clay man build by Jews in the ghetto outside Kracow in Poland in a attempt to fight the Nazi's. Rebecca's father had been one of his makers. She watched and when the adults left the body, she put her hand print in the still wet clay. The Nazi's collapsed a building on the golem, but he held it up long enough for 17 children, including Rebecca to escape. Sadly, two were buried with him for decades. For a time he went insane, but he's much better now. Decades later, after following the rainbow to Bulfinche's, he was reunited with Rebecca. Judah lived with her on the streets for a time. Of late, he has moved underground to become the protector of an unusual widow and child.
LUCAS WILSON: A computer programer and hacker, Lucas became a vampyre through a series of events he was not proud of. Moments before he found Bulfinche's, he had attacked a woman, but managed to stop himself from taking her blood. The gang helped him to get free of the threat of his sire. Lucas is a blood junkie and had to be detoxed off human blood onto animal. He still fights his craving because he doesn't want to cross over the line from man to monster. His hacking skills proved invaluable to averting the Apocalypse. Unfortunately a federal agent and cyber entity, The World Wide Spyder, discovered that he had hacked into US defense computer systems to help save the world and he was almost arrested. Instead Uncle Sam recruited him into the DMA (Department of Mystic Affairs) as a computer consultant. Together he and The Spyder are working to improve the security of the nation's computer systems.
